On Monday, 27 January, Hon Minister Evarist Bartolo and Middlesea Insurance President and CEO Alfredo Munoz visited one of the workshops promoting healthy lifestyle habits held at St Clare Primary School in Pembroke.
The Institute of Prevention, Health and Environment within Fundación MAPFRE embarked on a nationwide campaign last year sponsoring “Caqlaq” a Healthy Living Campaign endorsed by the Ministry of Education and Employment, in a number of local Primary Schools for children aged from 7 to 9 years. Middlesea Insurance, which forms part of the MAPFRE Group, was entrusted with coordinating the “Caqlaq” campaign with the help of animation group Generation Green.
The aim of this campaign is to highlight the importance of having a healthy lifestyle by following a balanced diet and doing physical activity by making children aware of the risks of not taking care of their body. The program is conducted through a series of fun, comical and interactive workshops held in the children’s classrooms.
During the workshops, Chef Smoothie explains the healthy food pyramid in simple terms which can be understood by children, encouraging them to eat more fruits and vegetables. The energetic and cheerful chef then prepares a number of tasty and healthy smoothies to be sampled by all the children. Then, another character, Fitboy demonstrate to children how they too can become as fit and healthy as him by exercising. He also performs the song “I need vitamins” and teaches the children the choreography.
As part of the campaign a total of 10,000 books were distributed to students and schools to reinforce the message.
In his address, Mr Munoz stated that health is often referred to as the most valuable thing one can have. Unfortunately, however, it is often neglected and this leads to a number of health problems. Local statistics indicate that conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes are on the rise. “Middlesea Insurance is thankful to Fundación MAPFRE for supporting this initiative and we look forward to developing it further in the future,” he added.
